Chestnut gel is used to treat varicose veins. Horse chestnut is a relatively new medicinal plant. In the Czech Republic, chestnut began to be used at the end of the 17th century. The gel contains flowers, fruits, seeds and young skin of the chestnut. Active substances in chestnut are escin, esculin, flavonoids, glycosides and tannins. Escin strengthens the walls of blood vessels, making them elastic. The gel reduces swelling and also soothes skin irritation in hemorrhoids.
